What is a Ball Nose End Mill?

Ball nose end mills, also known as full radius end mills or ball mills, are cutting tools where the nose radius is equal to half of the diameter of the tool. This creates a constant single radius (or ball) at the tool end with no straight edge (sharp corners) in the profile. They are used for contour milling, shallow slotting, pocketing and contouring applications. Ball nose mills are ideal for 3D contouring because they are less prone to chipping and leave a nice rounded edge.

Tip: Use a Roughing end mill first to remove large areas of material then proceed with a ball nose end mill.

Stella ★★★★★

Cutting a 3D contour in hardwood with this 1/8" ball nose was buttery smooth, and the 1" cut length gave me plenty of depth without chatter. The two-flute up-cut design cleared chips fast, so I didn't have to pause to blow out the slot. Finishing a second run later confirms the edge is still sharp.

Abigail ★★★★★

The AstraHP coating really holds up — I ran this ball nose through a full afternoon of rounded slot work in maple and it stayed sharp with no burn marks on the edges. The 1/8 tip and 1-inch cut length make it easy to hit tight 3D contours without any chatter.

Penelope ★★★★★

Cut a batch of 3D contour passes in walnut and the finish off this 1/8 ball nose was glass smooth, no sanding needed on the curves. Two flutes cleared chips fine even at a decent feed rate, and the tip still looks sharp after a few hours of milling.
